Latest Derek Dixon social media post has UNC fans fearing the worst

While he didn't confirm anything, his latest social media post has Tar Heel fans overly concerned about his future.

In this era of social media, it's easy to overreact over certain things that are shared on the internet.

When it comes to the current state of college athletics, anything (and everything) a student-athlete shares instantly takes the spotlight, as fans look for some insight as to what is going on with their favorite players.

Derek Dixon fits the bill, given the ascension he took during his freshman season at North Carolina. After starting the season coming off the bench, Dixon made it impossible for Hubert Davis to keep him in that role, eventually inserting him into the starting unit.

From there, Dixon took off, fully grabbing the reins of the offense while making some big-time shots in the process.

Of curse, at the end of each season, it's not guaranteed that players will stay at a respective university. With the coaching change coming in Chapel Hill, the state of the 2025-2026 roster is very much in doubt, as Dixon fueled that fire by his cryptic social media post on Friday night.

Is Derek Dixon leaving UNC?

A few hours after his freshman classmate Caleb Wilson shared a post announcing that he was entering the 2026 NBA Draft, Dixon followed it up with a post of his own that has fans going crazy

To go with a slideshow of photos from his freshman season at UNC, Dixon used a short caption to go along with the photos.

"What a ride."

What does that mean?

There's not enough context in that to suggest that he is, in fact, entering the transfer portal.

While it could be insinuating that it could happen, that "what a ride" statement could simply be talking about his first year at UNC, taking in all the experiences he earned during his true freshman season.

It's safe to say that Dixon sure knows how to rile up the fan base, as the comments on the post have fans in true panic mode! Of all the players who can return, Dixon is likely at or near the top of the fan's wishlist to keep, but it's safe to say that plenty of other programs will try to poach Dixon away from Chapel Hill.

Before we all hit the "Panic button," let's wait to see how it plays out.
