Joel Berry is totally justified in having mixed emotions about Hubert Davis' future as the head coach of the UNC basketball program.
During his time at North Carolina, Berry got to see the version of Davis as an assistant coach, seeing the type of compassion and competitiveness the current head coach of the Tar Heels showed on a daily basis.
However, now years removed from his time at Chapel Hill, Berry is seeing the game through a very different lens as a member of the media.

From afar the last few years, they just don't have that killer instinct, and I just don't look at them as a team that could win a national championship.
When asked if he believes Davis is still the right guy for the job, Berry provided a very honest answer.
This horrific Hubert Davis stat shows there's smoke to UNC fans wanting him gone
"It's a hard conversation for me because that's someone that has coached me I've seen him behind the scenes and seen the competitiveness and what he's able to get out of his players.
I'm just starting to question some of the endgame adjustments. And then I'm starting to question the roster construction, not having enough guys to be able to withstand not having Caleb Wilson, Tyler (Hansbrough) said it. They're not playing against Caleb Wilson, they're playing against North Carolina.
My emotions are mixed right now. At one point, I said, "Okay, coach Davis was for the job, but I'm just, I'm having a lot of mixed emotions because it's the same old story, and as a player, as a former player, it's just the standard hasn't been lived up to."
Tyler Hansbrough reveals changes he'd make at UNC and they are spot on
While Berry is definitely conflicted on what to think about the situation (as we all are, given no one hates Hubert Davis the person), the former national champion says he wouldn't be surprised if a move is made but thinks there might be a possibility for Davis to remain in the coaching seat at North Carolina.
"I would tell everyone 100% no (if he would be surprised if Davis is fired). And you have all the, you have all the facts, you have everything out there to say, okay, yeah, he should be fired. I wouldn't be surprised, but I don't think he will because you gotta look forward. He's bringing in a great recruiting class. You gotta think about buyout situations, what that takes away from being able to allocate to towards next year's roster.
Those are some of the things that you have to think about, you just can't make a decision based on. You know the emotion right now. You gotta sit down, lay all the cards on the table and see, okay, if we fire 'em what will happen and what won't happen."
Only time will tell what happens. but it's definitely a situation that those who played for Davis seem to be conflicted on.
