Indya Nivar's time away from the Atlanta Dream didn't last very long

When the Atlanta Dream waived Indya Nivar on July 7, no one really knew what the future held for the former UNC women's basketball standout.

Before being released, Nivar appeared in 19 games, averaging just 3.2 minutes per contest. She logged double figure minutes in just two of those appearances, as her season-high (and career-high) came on June 24 when she played 11 minutes in the Dream's 77-66 loss to the Golden State Valkyries.

It didn't take very long for some clarity to come along, as the Dream see the value in keeping Nivar around for the foreseeable future.

Indya Nivar signs a Player Development Contract with the Atlanta Dream

Nivar is back with the organization that drafted her, as she agreed to a Player Development Contract with the Dream.

Now, you may be wondering what a Player Development Contract is. If you're unfamiliar with it, don't worry, it's a brand-new addition to the WNBA landscape.

Introduced as part of the 2026 collective bargaining agreement, a WNBA player development contract is an expanded roster designation. Each franchise can sign up to two players beyond their standard 12-player roster, allowing organizations with a training pipeline to invest in young prospects without having to commit to a full standard contract.

These newly-designed contracts are typically aimed for players who have zero to three seasons of WNBA experience. They fully practice with the team, attend all meetings and even travel for games. In terms of playing time, a development player can be activated for up to 12 games per season, as each franchise has a combined total of 24 active games to distribute between their two developmental players.

Of course, no one wanted to see Nivar be stripped of her standard contract. However, this signing is a very positive sign for a variety of reasons.

For starters, it shows that the Dream see the value in keeping her around the franchise. While the decision to release her in the first place was likely a difficult one, the organization still has a way to keep her in the mix.

Additionally, the development aspect is also a major positive, as Nivar has the chance to continue enhancing her game. We all know how injuries, personal reasons and other factors keep players from suiting up, so when her team needs her, Nivar will be ready to take the court.

For a player like Indya Nivar, a young rookie looking to make her mark, you definitely won't pass up an opportunity like this. While her initial release was disappointing, it's great to see her quickly find her way back to the Dream's roster, having the chance to continue proving that she is, in fact, a WNBA-caliber player and has the talent, drive and determination to be an impact player for many years to come.
