This situation keeps getting uglier.

On Tuesday night, the University of North Carolina announced that they have parted ways with men's basketball head coach Hubert Davis. The decision comes following the conclusion of Davis' fifth season at the helm.

Both Bubba Cunningham and Steve Newmark released statements on the matter, the first indication that this move wasn't a mutual one. In fact, Cunningham's statement made it clear that it was an administration decision, not a mutual one.

Bubba Cunningham delivers the painful truth after the Hubert Davis firing

A little while after the news broke, Davis took to his own Instagram account to release a statement of his own.

Davis makes things crystal clear

You can see Davis' full statement below:

First, Davis admits he was, in fact, let go by the university. He claims that his desire was to continue coaching in Chapel Hill. What might surprise some is his statement is how he closed it, admitting he plans to coach again in the very near future.

In the past, Davis has said that North Carolina is the only place he wanted to coach, but now, having had the taste of the coaching life, it seems like that stance has changed.

Now that it's clear what happened

It's disappointing that Davis was fired by the university. There was speculation that they were doing everything they could to make this a mutual parting, however, it seems like the two sides couldn't get on the same page on how to proceed, thus leading to the university electing to firing him.

For someone who has been such a great representation of the university in various different roles, it is absolutely heartbreaking to see it end like this. Whether you agree with the decision or not, you have to feel for Davis and his family, as Chapel Hill is their home. Davis deserved a better outcome, and it's unfortunate that it didn't work out the way we all hoped it would.
