The news became official on Tuesday night: North Carolina has elected to part ways with head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons.
UNC and Hubert Davis part ways in a move fans have been begging for since loss to VCU
While the initial reporting had it seem like it was a mutual decision to part ways, the more information that has come along has indicated that he was actually fired, meaning that the university will have to honor the remaining terms of his contract (approximately $5.3 million).
Shortly after the news broke, the university released official statements from both Bubba Cunningham and Steve Newmark. The press release indicates that the recommendation to move on was made by Cunningham and Newmark, while the final approval was given by Chancellor Lee H. Roberts.
First, let's start with Cunningham's statement.
Cunningham delivers the painful truth
"We appreciate all that Hubert has done for Carolina as a player, assistant coach, head coach
and community leader – he has helped make special memories we will never forget,"
Cunningham said. "This was not an easy decision because of Hubert's tremendous character
and all he has given to the program, but we must move forward in a way that allows our team
to compete more consistently at an elite level."
The final line of the statement, "we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level," is the hard truth to the matter.
Cunningham nolted how much Davis is loved at the University of North Carolina, but after multiple discussions and reflections, it was determined that he isn't the guy to take the program back to an elite status.
Newmark chimes in
Hubert cares deeply for our University, and it has been inspiring to watch him
instill that love and Tar Heel tradition into the players he has coached. Chancellor Roberts,
Bubba and I join all of the Carolina community in thanking Hubert and his family for all they
have done for UNC."
Newmark, who is set to take over as the university's Director of Athletics on July 1, provided a shorter statement, one that was aimed at thanking Davis for his contributions over the last five seasons.
How will UNC proceed?
A national search is underway to find the Tar Heels' next men's basketball coach, as Cunningham and Newmark will lead the charge on that process. The university has hired executive search firm Turnkey ZRG to assist, while an advisory group of key stakeholders (including former players, coaches and supporters of UNC athletics) will be asked to provide input to find the next leader of the program.
