If you were hoping to see Hubert Davis let loose a little after North Carolina found out aboutĀ its first-round location and opponent, you did not get your wish.
The Tar Heels social media account posted the team's reaction after earning a No. 6 seed in a loaded South Region where they will play VCU in Greenville, S.C. After the selection, Davis addressed the team and it was a little underwhelming.

"In our mind, our preparation, our practice and our play, the only thing we're thinking about is let's win two games in Greenville, let's win this tournament," Davis said.Ā "After we win the two games in Greenville, then we'll go to the Houston tournament, and we'll focus on the Houston tournament...then we'll think about the Indianapolis tournament."
UNC shares Hubert Davis' message with team after tournament assignment
I mean...it's a fine message I suppose. Davis wants the guys to take this tournament one step at a time and don't look past the challenge in front of them. It's a good message to the team after something like a Monday practice, but in the moments after the selection, I was hoping for a little more vigor and fire to match the moment.
Selection Sunday is supposed to be the day when the teams invited to the NCAA Tournament can simply celebrate for a few hours. Even if the expectations are high, like they are always at UNC, there's something about getting in and taking a moment to enjoy the fact that the goal of getting into the big dance has been achieved. It would've been nice to see Davis get a little excited.
It's a constant reminder of the concern that the pressure has beaten up Davis. He hears the frustration from fans about the inconsistency that the Tar Heels have suffered from over much of his tenure. And when things started to look a little brighter and optimism was growing, the team lost Caleb Wilson to injury in what's almost certain to be his only season in Chapel Hill. It would be nice to see Davis show a little more first, but maybe he's waiting until the Heels win the Greenville tournament.Ā
