After spending each of his first two seasons at North Carolina manning the hot corner at third base, Gavin Gallaher transitioned to a new position ahead of his junior season.
While taking reps in the middle infield, Scott Forbes and his staff looked to find the best fit for Gallaher, who would also be taking on a role as one of the team captains for the 2026 season. With Jake Schaffner coming to town via the transfer portal, Forbes elected to shift Gallaher to the right side of the infield, making him the everyday second baseman.
The decision was one that couldn't have gone better for both Gallaher and the Tar Heels.
Gallaher wasted no time becoming the best defensive second baseman in the country. Yes, you may think that statement is bias (which, it might be), however, the numbers don't lie.
To solidify the validity of that above statement, Gallaher's latest accolade will do just that.
Gavin Gallaher earns a ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award
While he was playing for a spot in the national championship game with his team (making double plays like the one below), Gallaher earned some national recognition for his efforts with the glove.

Gallaher became the second UNC baseball player ever to receive an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award, an honor that has been in college baseball's postseason awards since 2007. You may have heard of the other Tar Heel to earn this accolade:

Entering Wednesday afternoon's action, Gallaher ranked fourth nationally and first among non-catchers in Defensive Runs Saved (19.37). Given his performance in the win over West Virginia, it's pretty safe to say that it has risen in just a few short hours.
To put this into perspective, no other non-catcher has saved more runs defensively this season than Gallaher. Not only is he the best second baseman that the sport has to offer, but he is making the case to be the best overall defensive player in the entire country.
Gallaher developed into a good defender at third base, but he has been absolutely elite at second base this season. For a guy who is likely to be taken in this year's MLB Draft, the junior infielder may have found the best position for him moving forward, one that he's played almost flawlessly throughout the entire 2026 season.
His bat will draw attention from Major League scouts, especially how he rises to the occasion in postseason action, but now his defensive ability makes him even more attractive for teams as they search for future cornerstones for their franchise.

What a season it's been for Gavin Gallaher and the Diamond Heels, who are now just two wins away from bringing home the UNC baseball program's first ever national championship. As one of the leaders of this team, Gallaher has set the tone for how the Tar Heels should go about their daily business, making sure that the efforts in improving defensively are just as important as the ones made offensively.
You can find a lot of words to describe Gavin Gallaher. Leader, tough and clutch are ones that instantly come to mind. However, now when you talk about him, make sure you mention the words "Gold Glover," as his newly-acquired hardware is a testment to just how much work he's put in now only this season, but since he stepped foot on campus in Chapel Hill.
