Montgomery's decision will end a recruitment that has drawn interest from several of college basketball's premier programs, including North Carolina and its biggest rival.
While the Tar Heels remain in the picture, the recent momentum surrounding Montgomery's recruitment hasn't exactly been pointing toward Chapel Hill.
UNC will learn its fate with Asa Montgomery on Wednesday
Montgomery has been a priority target for the Tar Heels throughout Michael Malone's first full recruiting cycle with the program.
The 6-foot-7 forward made his official visit to Chapel Hill on September 25, allowing Malone and his staff to pitch to one of the 2027 class's best players.
Just one week later, Montgomery made a short trip down Tobacco Road to pay an official visit to Duke. That's when the momentum in his recruitment appeared to shift heavily toward the Blue Devils.
Multiple Crystal Ball predictions have since favored Duke, making Jon Scheyer's program the team to watch as Montgomery approaches his decision.
Of course, recruiting predictions are exactly that: predictions.
Nothing becomes official until Montgomery makes the announcement himself on Wednesday afternoon.
Still, UNC would pull off quite the recruiting victory if Malone and company could overcome the momentum Duke has built over the last few weeks. Montgomery also canceled previously scheduled official visits to Arizona and Louisville following his trip to Durham, further signaling that his recruitment was nearing its conclusion.
Now we know exactly when that conclusion will arrive.
Malone and the Tar Heels have already made significant progress with several elite prospects in the 2027 recruiting class, and Montgomery would represent another major addition to what Malone is attempting to build in Chapel Hill.
However, the Tar Heels aren't exactly entering Wednesday's announcement as the perceived favorite.
We'll find out for sure Wednesday afternoon whether the recent recruiting buzz was accurate or whether Michael Malone has a surprise waiting for everyone.
