Even a national title couldn't hold off the weight of the NBA for UNC legend Tyler Hansbrough

Hansbrough kept things real on how his passion for hoops changed over time.

When he was on campus, all-time UNC great Tyler Hansbrough was a total rockstar. Hansbrough, also known as Psycho T, helped North Carolina win the national title in 2009, with a lopsided win over Tom Izzo and Michigan State getting posted. He's still beloved all over Chapel Hill, and let's be real, that's never going to change.

Unfortunately, though, Hansbrough isn't just remembered for being a Carolina legend. Plenty of people, including Duke supporters, are quick to bring up that he was a first-round bust in the NBA, never living up to the hype after he said goodbye to the college level.

It was tough to see Hansbrough not have the same kind of success he did under Roy Williams after making the jump to the pros. On a podcast, Hansbrough showcased his human side a bit, breaking down what happened. In essence, Psycho T said he lost his love for the game, with the pressure of the league getting to him a bit. We all thought Hansbrough was Superman, but at the end of the day, the outside noise got to him, which is a complete and total shame.

“I put so much pressure on myself to be a good NBA player," Hansbrough said. "I kind of lost a little bit of love for the game. I was playing to, like, prove people wrong and not really playing because I love the game.”

Also in that interview, Hansbrough admitted that the criticisms that were coming his way ended up being too much to handle at some points. In the end, the UNC natty winner spent seven seasons in the NBA before heading overseas to close out his career. Hansbrough was a first-round pick by the Pacers, spending four years there. That was followed by two years with the Raptors and one campaign with Charlotte.

Hansbrough eventually made his way to China, saying that due to the language barrier, he wasn't sure if people were going after him or not after games. Because of this, it allowed him to wipe out any negative noise and just hoop. That helped his love for the game come back, but the fact that it was wiped away while he was still in the NBA indeed is pretty dang disappointing.

“When I went to China, my love for the game came back," Hansbrough made clear. "I started to get my confidence up, playing good again, and I just got away from all the BS - and just got to focus on basketball.”

Now that he's retired, Hansbrough has more time to follow UNC hoops, with him being a huge fan of the Michael Malone hire. His connection with the program is obviously sky-high, with that never changing. And while some people might look back on his NBA career and say that he was a failure, the good thing is that Hansbrough can flash his '09 national title ring in everyone's face.

He won't do that, however, because of how humble a guy he is, but Carolina Nation can be quick to bring that up. At the end of the day, he went from being 'the guy' at UNC to someone who couldn't quite match the same level of dominance at the next level. It ruined his passion for the sport for a little while, but again, it should never take away from what he accomplished in Chapel Hill. Period.
