In an interview with Talia Goodman of Rivals, Ojo broke down why North Carolina was the right choice for her:
“Obviously, UNC is just like a great school academically, but then also just like the people there,” Ojo told Rivals. “I mean, the amount of time Coach [Courtney] Banghart and the staff have invested in the relationship and getting to know my family and I. Also just the players, getting to meet them on my visit and just the energy, that great energy. It’s just great all around.”
Ojo is one of the most versatile players in the Class of 2027. She's coming off a junior season in which she was named the 2025-26 Gatorade Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 16.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 2.6 blocks while leading Princess Anne High School to an undefeated season and its fourth consecutive Class 5 state championship.
Ojo is not only a state champion, but also a two-time gold medalist with Team USA. This summer, Ojo competed in the FIBA U17 Women's World Cup, averaging 11 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, shooting 47.5% from the field and 42.9% from the arc, and earning a second-team selection.
This feels like the absolute perfect fit for what Courtney Banghart and her staff are building in Chapel Hill. Ojo's ability to play and defend multiple positions, rebound, and initiate offense makes her the perfect complement to Kate Harpring and Nyla Brooks, two young stars the Tar Heels are currently building around. Add Ojo to the mix, and you quite frankly could have a three-headed monster holding down the fort in Chapel Hill for years to come.
Banghart continues to prove she's an elite recruiter. After landing Harpring, the No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2026 class, she followed it up by landing Ojo, a top-10-ranked player in the 2027 class. Not only has she reeled in top recruits on the high school recruiting trail, but also has brought in quality talent via the transfer portal to help create a perfect blend to compete in the ACC.
With visions of taking this program to another level, Banghart's recruiting is definitely helping the Tar Heels make that leap. It's only a matter of time before the program takes that next step, and the talented players, such as Micah Ojo, who have committed to the program believe that it's coming very soon.
