Courtney Banghart has given one of her assistant coaches a much-deserved promotion ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
After two seasons as an assistant coach, Banghart believes that Cory McNeill is ready to take on a bigger role with the UNC women's basketball program.

McNeill will now serve as Banghart's right-hand man, becoming the UNC women's basketball program's new associate head coach.

McNeill has made an incredible impact on the program since joining Banghart's staff. Helping the Tar Heels reach consecutive Sweet 16 appearances, McNeill has focused on developing the team's guards, a task he's handled extremely well.
This is not McNeill's first rodeo as an associate head coach. Prior to arriving in Chapel Hill, McNeill served in the same role at East Carolina, a role he earned following stops at Coppin State, Georgetown, Virginia, and Hartford.
In a statement made to Go Heels, Banghart raved about her new associate head coach:
"Cory (McNeill) brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and a tireless work ethic to this program every day. He is a players' coach, teaching and celebrating our players every step of the way. He is a relationship builder in the recruiting space and such a valued member of the entire Carolina community. My staff and I are grateful to have him on our sideline and know that we will continue to accomplish great things with his passion and leadership."
The UNC women's basketball program got a really good coach and an even better person when Cory McNeill was hired. Based on his two seasons in Chapel Hill, it's safe to say McNeill will keep doing terrific things as he embarks on this new opportunity.
North Carolina opens up its 2026-2027 season on November 2 when they travel to Paris, France to take on Oklahoma in the Oui Play event.
