While no decision has been made just yet, all signs point to the UNC basketball program making a head coaching change this offseason.

5 realistic head coach candidates UNC should target if the Hubert Davis era ends

If the university goes through with it, the talk in Chapel Hill will surround who will be the next head coach of the historic program. There will be many names thrown out there, especially because of North Carolina's Blue Blood history, as top-tier targets will likely be more than willing to hear what the Tar Heels have to say about the opportunity.

With all this in mind, we asked ChatGPT to weigh in on who should be the next coach of the UNC basketball program. Fans will love who they believe is the "best choice," but there are some other intriguing options they throw around.

The ideal UNC coaching profile

ChatGPT based its decision making on the following areas that UNC should prioritize:

Elite Recruiter (Transfer Portal and High School)
Proven March success
Can handle pressures of a Blue Blood job
Either: Carolina ties OR proven top-tier winner (worth breaking the "keeping it in the family" tradition for

The Candidates

In alphabetical order, here are the candidates that were named:

Mark Byington
Billy Donovan
Scott Drew
Todd Golden
Danny Hurley
Nate Oats
Marcus Paige
King Rice
Brad Stevens

Joel Berry just said what UNC fans seem to be thinking about Hubert Davis

"The Best Choice"

ChatGPT believes that Nate Oats would be a home run hire for the UNC basketball program.

With his moden offense, proven resume and elite recruiting ability, Oats would instantly bring North Carolina back to that elite-level status, as his arrival in Chapel Hill could quickly serve as a turnaround for the program.

"Safest Smart Hire"

Based on what he's accomplished at Vanderbilt, ChatGPT believes Mark Byington would be the safest smart hire that North Carolina could make.

A guy who still seems to have a ton of untapped potential, he has proven that he can build sustainable winners, and his focus on culture (along with his coaching style that fits the modern game extremely well) would serve as a nice mix for the Tar Heels moving forward.

"If They Stay in the Family"

While most Tar Heel fans want to avoid this at all costs, the name they threw out to be the "in-house" candidate is an interesting one to say the least.

Marcus Paige had an outstanding career as a player at North Carolina and has been a key assistant during the Hubert Davis era. This would be an extremely high-risk/high-reward type of decision, as Paige has no Division I head coaching experience under his belt.

Hiring Paige seems way too similar to what we just experienced with Davis, so this likely isn't going to be the outcome North Carolina elects to roll with.
