Caleb Wilson's NBA Summer League debut goes far beyond the historic performance he put on display in Las Vegas.

As we all know, a pair of injuries derailed his lone season at North Carolina. After February 10, Wilson was unable to suit up for the UNC basketball program, and his presence was sorely missed, as the Tar Heels went on to lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Since then, Wilson has carried this burden, as the emotion showed when he spoke to the media following his summer league debut.

Wilson shared that he cried before his NBA Summer League debut.

He wasn't crying because he was about to fulfill his lifelong dream. Of course, that probably played a role, but Wilson's emotion stemmed from the journey he's been on over the past five months, one that was rough for him given the circumstances.

Just wait until you hear what Wilson had to say.

"It's been 5 months to the day since the last time I played … I felt terrible because my team lost in the tournament, and my coach got fired. It just was a lot for me."

Wilson understands how valuable he was to the UNC basketball program. He knows that the Tar Heels were a much better team on the court when he was able to play and knows that his absence down the stretch hampered UNC's ability to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

His quote also makes it seem like he takes the blame for Hubert Davis' firing, which is quite the burden for a 19-year-old kid to take on.

As he often did during his lone season at UNC, Wilson used his phone's background to motivate him ahead of games. His lock screen on his phone ahead of Friday night's game was an image of him walking into Cameron Indoor Stadium with a wrist brace, ahead of North Carolina's regular-season finale against Duke, a game he couldn't play in due to the injury.

The feeling of not being able to play in that game, along with the others he missed down the stretch, was the motivation he needed as he anxiously awaited his return to the court.

As you can tell by his postgame quotes, Wilson is very hard on himself for how the end of his college career played out. However, injuries happen and unfortunately can't be controlled, as there's nothing he could've done to have the scenario play out differently.

The last few months have been difficult for Wilson in a variety of ways. Not only was he unable to compete in the sport he loves, but he also had to live with the feeling of letting his team down in the process. Davis' firing just added a whole new element to it, making Wilson feel even worse about the injury he sustained.

After five long months, Wilson was finally able to return to the thing he loves most: basketball. The journey to get here wasn't easy for him, and that burden he carries simply won't go away, but for now, the former Tar Heel can get back to doing what he does best as he jumpstarts his professional basketball career.

Without a doubt, the five-month journey he just experienced will motivate him for the rest of his playing career.
