"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

The Caleb Wilson era is officially over in Chapel Hill, as he shared a social media video post confirming that he will be entering the 2026 NBA Draft.

Caleb Wilson is entering the 2026 NBA Draft

After one injury-shortened season in Chapel Hill, Wilson is ready to take the leap to the pros. Tar Heel fans held out hope that Wilson would defy the odds, electing to return for another season, but deep down, we all knew his time at the college ranks was going to be a short amount of time.

The full transcript of what Wilson had to say in his heartfelt message to Tar Heel faithful can be found below:

“This past year has been the most fun year of my life, although it has been filled with a lot of growth and adversity. I will always cherish this university and the people who make this place what it is.

I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to represent North Carolina, wear number eight. Running out of that historic tournament every day for practice and games, and I’m happy to say every day I gave it my all.

Lastly, I would like to thank my family, coaches, fans, and support systems, especially my head coach, the godfather of Chapel Hill (Eric) Hoots, and my academic advisors, who always checked on me during my toughest times. With that being said, I will declare for the 2026 NBA Draft. Go Heels.”

What a historic freshman season it was for Wilson, one that earned him second-team All-American honors (which will earn his No. 8 jersey a spot in the Dean Smith Center rafters). He established UNC freshman records for highest scoring average (19.8 points per game), most consecutive games to begin a career with 24 games in double figures, and 20-point games (17). He became the first UNC basketball player ever to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists per game as a true freshman.

Tar Heel fans will remember his highlight-reel dunks and explosive playmaking ability he displayed on the court, but there's much more to Caleb Wilson than what he does as a basketball player.

Wilson defined what it means to be a Tar Heel. Even though he was destined to leave campus after one season, he bought into everything a college student should, as he truly unpacked his bags and made the most of every single minute he spent in Chapel Hill.

While injuries derailed his time on the court, there's no doubt that he left his mark on the university as a whole. In just a short amount of time, he built a legacy that will never be forgotten.
