Bill Belichick has heard enough of the criticism surrounding Billy Edwards Jr.

Throughout the 2026 season, UNC's starting quarterback has faced plenty of scrutiny. While Edwards has had his share of struggles, he's also shown flashes of why Belichick continues to trust him to lead the Tar Heels' offense.

Following UNC's victory on Saturday, Belichick was asked to assess Edwards' performance.

His response made it abundantly clear that he's growing tired of the constant questions surrounding his quarterback.

"Billy's been doing a good job for us," Belichick said. "Seems like every week I come in here, and you guys want to bench him and talk about the passes he missed. Last week he's quarterback of the week in the ACC."

That wasn't all Belichick had to say.

"Look, he's playing quarterback. Nobody's going to bat 1.000 playing that position, but he's done a good job for us. He's been able to move the team, score points, and been consistent. So is there always room for improvement? Sure, but he's done a good job for us."

Bill Belichick isn't backing down from his support of Billy Edwards Jr.

It's no secret that Edwards has been a polarizing figure among the UNC football fan base.

When things haven't gone according to plan on offense, the quarterback position naturally becomes a major talking point. Fans have questioned whether a change under center could provide the spark the Tar Heels need, especially during stretches when the offense has struggled to find consistency.

However, Belichick clearly sees things differently.

His comments are particularly interesting, given that Edwards was named ACC Quarterback of the Week after his performance against Miami, where he showed he could make plays against high-level competition.

Of course, that doesn't mean Belichick believes his quarterback is above criticism. In fact, he acknowledged that Edwards still has areas of his game that need improvement.

However, there's a significant difference between recognizing that a player needs to improve and suggesting that he shouldn't be on the field.

Belichick appears to believe that some of the criticism directed toward Edwards has crossed that line.

Given how directly he addressed the recurring questions about benching his quarterback, it's clear the subject has become a source of frustration. The reality is that Edwards hasn't been perfect, and nobody, including Belichick, is suggesting otherwise.

Belichick emphasizes that you shouldn't evaluate quarterback play solely by missed opportunities. Edwards' ability to move the offense, put points on the scoreboard, and provide leadership also deserves consideration.

Edwards Jr. has done that and has led this UNC football team to a spot where they're one win away from becoming bowl game eligible. Quite the turnaround based on how last season went.

With the Tar Heels preparing for their upcoming matchup against Louisville, Belichick has made his position crystal clear:

Billy Edwards Jr. is his quarterback, and he isn't interested in entertaining the critics who still clamor for a change at the position.

The Tar Heels are sticking with No. 9 at quarterback whether you like it or not.
