The UNC football program has lost a commitment from its 2026 class, as running back Amir Brown has elected to re-evaluate his options.

Hayes Fawcett of Rivals was the first to report the news:

This shouldn't come as a surprise, given Brown's recruitment hasn't been fully closed. Back in September, Brown announced that he would be taking an official visit to Notre Dame on October 18, a sign that the Raleigh, North Carolina native could be changing his mind on where to call his future home.

While the Fighting Irish are likely the team to beat in this re-opened recruitment, don't be shocked if Florida State and Ohio State, two of his original finalists, jump back in as well. Penn State, who just recently fired head coach James Franklin, was also heavily involved, but it's uncertain if the coaching questions in Happy Valley will deter him from considering the Nittany Lions.

Of course, you never want to lose recruits, especially those who are impactful players with the ball in their hands. However, it's better to lose a player now than later, as it allows Bill Belichick and company time to explore other potential options that could be out there for them.

With all the head coaching firings that continue to surface, there should be plenty of transfer portal options available for the UNC football program to explore. Given that Brown is currently in the 2027 class, there's also ample time for the Tar Heels to pivot and find another talented running back to add to the future depth chart.
