UNC Football: Board of Trustees To Meet Regarding Tez Walker
By Jordan Falls
The UNC Board of Trustees has scheduled an emergency meeting regarding the status of UNC Football wide receiver Tez Walker.
By now, every UNC football fan is familiar with the Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker situation involving his eligibility status and the NCAA ruling. If you happened to miss our most recent update, it was last Thursday when the NCAA ruled Walker ineligible for the 2023 season. Mack Brown had some strong words for the NCAA, which can be viewed in the link above. North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham also released a statement on Walker’s behalf.
In the Tar Heels 40-34 double-overtime victory over Appalachian State, the UNC football program honored Tez Walker with stickers on its helmets and named him to be an honorary captain for the pregame coin toss. Almost twenty-four hours after their victory over the Mountaineers, it has been announced that the UNC Board of Trustees has called an emergency meeting regarding an athletics matter.
According to InsideCarolina, the “athletics matter” is to pursue and explore all options regarding Walker’s eligibility. We aren’t fully aware of what those avenue options for Walker may be, but Mack Brown has hinted that legal action would be the next step for the Tar Heels to explore if the NCAA denied Walker eligibility (which they did).
It isn’t certain the Board of Trustees knows what those avenues may be either at this time. It appears the purpose of this meeting is to brainstorm options for Walker and his eligibility with the UNC football program. It is possible that the Board of Trustees will hit a dead end, and Walker remains ineligible for the 2023 season. It is also possible that they are able to develop a plan of action to gain his eligibility back from the NCAA for the remaining 10 games on the Tar Heel schedule.
As more details develop, we will continue to have coverage of Tez Walker’s case here.
