The UNC Football program announced its team captains for the home opener against Appalachian State, including an honorary captain.

The UNC football program announced Saturday morning who the team captains will be for today’s game against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the home opener for 2023. The team captains will take the field for the coin toss against the Mountaineers.

The Tar Heels will have graduate senior Corey Gaynor represent the offensive side of the ball, while senior Kaimon Rucker will represent the defensive side of the ball after his dominant performance against South Carolina in week one.  Graduate senior Ben Kiernan will represent the special teams unit today against the Mountaineers.

The UNC football program had an honorary captain in week one when they faced the Gamecocks in Charlotte. In week two, they will also have an honorary captain, Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker.

On Thursday, Walker unfortunately learned that he was ruled ineligible for the 2023 season by the NCAA due to him being viewed as a two-time transfer. The Tar Heels will play for Walker on Saturday, just as they will for every game the rest of this season.

Carolina kicks off against Appalachian State at 5:15 PM ET on the ACC Network.
