UNC Baseball: Michael Busch continues to make impact
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC baseball player Michael Busch continues to make an impact at the major league level with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Last Monday, April 24th, former UNC baseball player Michael Busch got the call that he would be joining the Dodgers in Pittsburgh with two players going on paternity leave. One day later, Busch would make his MLB debut and record his first MLB hit, along with an RBI and a run scored that helped propel the Dodgers to an 8-7 win in his first start.
Now, after playing two more games and a few days off, Busch has once again stepped up to the plate and done even more damage. Just a week after getting a call to the majors, the Dodgers hosted the Philadelphia Phillies, and Busch made an impact with his bat.
Busch recorded his first career multi-hit game as a major leaguer, going 2-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. He also got the first stolen base of his MLB career and recorded two runs scored in the Dodgers’ 13-4 win over the Phillies.
Busch is currently batting .214 with one RBI and a 0.527 on-base percentage. While the Dodgers would like to see his batting average improve over time, and it’s still a small sample size, the most important thing that a prospect like Busch brings to the franchise is versatility.
In the four games that he has played, he has been at three different positions in the lineup. He made his MLB debut as the designated hitter, then started the other two games in Pittsburgh at third base. In his home game debut with Philadelphia, Busch started at second base for the Dodgers.
At the MLB level, versatility is what all franchises are looking for because when injuries happen (and they do), it is very beneficial to be able to move guys between multiple positions (especially in the infield). This may be something that allows Busch to stay with the MLB club in LA while he is finding his swing at this level.
We will also continue to monitor Busch in our Heels in the Pros recaps. This may be the best UNC baseball position player we have seen at this level in some time.
