There are quite a few North Carolina Tar Heels items to discuss today, including the attire of an NFL star, recruiting news, and more.
As 2023 is officially underway, I guess the “Jordan Year” has already been good to some.
For the North Carolina Tar Heels, the big news was the commitment of four-star Class of 2024 prospect James Brown on Monday night. He joins a recruiting class that is already loaded with talent (we’ll get to that in a bit), as Hubert Davis and his staff continue to haul in some quality student-athletes.
Did you happen to watch any NFL action this weekend? As a Jets fan, my season once again ended with disappointment (I know we have one more game, but it’s now meaningless), but I still enjoyed watching other teams compete for playoff spots.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Mike Evans had a monster day on the field, a performance that we want to connect to a UNC basketball legend.
Evans wears a Jordan UNC jersey
After recording 10 catches for 207 yards and three touchdowns in a win over the Carolina Panthers, Evans went to the podium wearing some North Carolina-inspired gear.
Here’s Mike Evans and Chris Godwin talking about Godwin Secret Santa gifting Evans a throwback Michael Jordan UNC jersey that he wore today and as Godwin (who rocked a throwback Grant Hill jersey today) put it, “He went crazy.” pic.twitter.com/BrZv4JWNrS

Evans talked to reporters while wearing a Michael Jordan UNC basketball jersey, a fitting outfit after a dominant performance.
You may be wondering: where did he get the jersey from?
The answer is simple: his teammate Chris Godwin.
It’s safe to say that Godwin has fantastic taste in jerseys, and we believe Evans should wear it weekly since it brought him such good luck this past week.
North Carolina tops 2024 recruiting ranks
We mentioned earlier how the UNC basketball program received a commitment from four-star big man James Brown. His addition is the second over the last week, as the Tar Heels now have three players filling their recruiting class of 2024.
At the moment, the Tar Heels now hold the top spot in the Class of 2024 team rankings:
With the addition of James Brown, the UNC basketball program currently holds the top Class of 2024 recruiting class, according to @247recruiting.

Commits:
Five-star Elliot Cadeau (No. 10 overall)
Four-star James Brown (No. 27)
Four-star Drake Powell (No. 50)
Give Hubert Davis and his staff a ton of credit: it’s still early on in the process for this class, and yet the Tar Heels have done major damage. Even though the trio is a very nice group to bring in, my feeling is that North Carolina isn’t done just yet.
Duo closing in on UNC basketball history
We saw Caleb Love join the 1,000-point scorers club earlier in the season and now are on the verge of seeing two more Tar Heels accomplish the feat.
Both UNC basketball programs have student-athletes on the verge of reaching the 1,000 career point scoring mark:

RJ Davis (995 Points)
Deja Kelly (987 Points)
Heading into this week’s action, RJ Davis and Deja Kelly are both on track to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. Davis, who is back in action on Wednesday night against Wake Forest, is just five points away, while Kelly is just 13 points away heading into Thursday’s matchup at Miami.
Davis, who averages nearly 16 points per game, should have no problem joining the club on Wednesday, while Kelly, who is coming off back-to-back 20+ point contests, should also reach the personal milestone in no time.
Other North Carolina Tar Heels News and Notes
It’s been a bit of a rough go for both UNC basketball programs of late, but hey, there’s plenty of basketball left to be played.
If you need something to cheer you up during these tough times, take a closer look at what Brady Manek is doing with the Perth Wildcats. You can also take some time to go down memory lane, as we broke down our top memories from the 2022 calendar year.
No matter what, it’s still always a Great Day to be a Tar Heel.
