For the second consecutive season, the UNC women’s basketball program will reportedly take on South Carolina in a “secret scrimmage.”

Prior to the start of the 2021-2022 season, the UNC women’s basketball program competed on the road against South Carolina in an exhibition game that was closed to the public.

This year, it appears as if the rematch will occur, but this time in Chapel Hill.

According to R.L. Bynum of the Tar Heel Tribune, Courtney Banghart and the Tar Heels are reportedly hosting the reigning national champions for a similar contest on October 22. This date also marks when the UNC men’s basketball program will host Rutgers for their “secret scrimmage.

Given that scrimmages like these are intended to be closed to the public, Bynum noted in his post that the University of North Carolina will not confirm or announce any details about preseason scrimmages. However, the News & Observer was able to obtain a contract that shows the agreement to play between the two programs.

At the time of last year’s preseason matchup, little did anyone know that these two teams would meet come NCAA Tournament time. The Gamecocks ended the Tar Heels’ season with a 69-61 victory in the Sweet 16, as you could easily make the case that Banghart’s team gave South Carolina its biggest challenge during their tournament run.

Heading into the 2022-2023 season, the Tar Heels have high expectations set for themselves. With four starters returning to the mix, North Carolina undoubtedly has enough talent to go even further this year, as this group returns with redemption on their minds.

This will be yet another great test for the UNC women’s basketball program, as they’ll compete against one of the nation’s top programs. Although we won’t be able to watch it, this matchup has the makings to be a very competitive scrimmage that should help both teams prepare for their upcoming seasons.
