Although we won’t be able to watch the UNC basketball program’s “Secret Scrimmage,” at least we know when (and who) it will be against!

Before the start of every college basketball season, the NCAA allows programs to hold one “secret scrimmages.”

They are referred to by this name due to the fact that media and fans are not allowed to view it. These contests typically take place in place of a public exhibition game, as teams elect to get some private work in before they kick off their regular season slate.

These scrimmages aren’t just for five-on-five play. Instead, coaches use these opportunities to work on situational things while competing against other programs.

For the UNC basketball program, this year’s “secret scrimmage” contest will be against a very competitive Big Ten opponent.

The Tar Heels will host Rutgers University on October 22 at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Led by head coach Steve Pikiell, the Scarlet Knights are coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as a season in which they defeated five ranked teams.

With three starters returning, Rutgers will certainly be a tough challenge for North Carolina as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As they have high expectations following their run to last year’s national championship game, this will be a great opportunity for Hubert Davis and his staff to start working in some of the new additions in a competitive, yet non-meaningful, contest. Even though we won’t be able to view the game, the good news is that we are yet one step closer to opening tip-off.
