On Wednesday, the UNC women’s basketball program released its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2022-2023 regular season.

The 2022-2023 college basketball season is inching closer, as we now officially know who the UNC women’s basketball program will compete against as part of this year’s non-conference schedule.

Head coach Courtney Banghart and the Tar Heels will have their work cut out for them, as their non-conference slate matches them up with some very competitive opponents. At least four NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago are on North Carolina’s schedule, including two that made it to the Sweet 16 alongside the Tar Heels last year.

Of the team’s 11 scheduled non-conference matchups, five will be held at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill. Three of these contests will be true road games, while the remaining three will be played at neutral sites.

The season kicks off on November 9, as the Tar Heels will host Jackson State, the defending SWAC champions, in Chapel Hill. This will kick off a three-game homestand for the UNC women’s basketball program before they hit the road for the first time this season.

On November 16, the Tar Heels will host South Carolina State for a midday game. This contest will be geared toward students from local elementary schools.

After the three games at home, North Carolina will be on the road for four consecutive contests. The trip begins with a short trip to James Madison and leads the Tar Heels to Portland, Oregon for the Phil Knight Invitational. Following the invitational, it’s off to Indiana for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Tar Heels will return home for two games and then will hit the road to wrap up non-conference play. A matchup with Michigan, an Elite Eight team from last season, will be awaiting the Tar Heels as part of the Jumpman Invitational on December 20 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In a statement made in the official non-conference schedule release announcement, Banghart seems excited about the non-conference challenges that her team will face this season.

"“Our non-conference schedule was created in an effort to challenge us against teams from all across the country, versus a variety of styles of play and in unique environments before the gauntlet of the ACC. We will match up against five opponents from the Power 5 conferences, only one of which – TCU on Nov. 12th – will be at home. We are also thrilled to be included in two prestigious national tournaments: the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland over Thanksgiving and the inaugural Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte in December."

The ACC schedule for the UNC women’s basketball program hasn’t been announced yet. The Keeping It Heel team will continue to provide updates once the full schedule has been released.
