The UNC basketball program has extended an official offer to five-star guard Tre Johnson, whose father has a prior connection with head coach Hubert Davis.

After making an official offer to five-star guard Ian Jackson earlier in the week, the UNC basketball is wasting no time extending offers to some of the top players in the Class of 2024.

On social media, five-star guard Tre Johnson announced that he has received an offer from North Carolina. The Dallas, Texas native becomes the fourth player from the Class of 2024 to receive an offer from the Tar Heels.

Johnson is a highly-coveted prospect, as he ranks among the top 5 players in his graduating class. In their most recent rankings, 247Sports Composite tabs Johnson as the No. 3 overall prospect in the country and rates him as the top overall player coming out of the state of Texas.

At this point in his recruitment, Johnson holds offers from some notable programs, including Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UNLV. As he continues to showcase his elite talent, it’s certain that more programs will throw their hat into the mix.

There’s a very interesting connection between the Johnson family and UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis, one that goes back to when the now Tar Heel coach was playing professional basketball.

During his time with the Dallas Mavericks, Davis met Tre Johnson’s father, Robert, during a workout. Now 20 years later, their paths have crossed again, ironically enough due to the sport of basketball.

Robert Johnson told Inside Carolina a little bit about his first encounter with Davis:

"“I was telling him (Davis) a story about watching him in a shooting drill and remembering how precise he was. But by then (early April) one of their assistant coaches (Jeff Lebo) had already reached out and told me that they would be watching Tre this spring and summer.”"

The Tar Heels are not shying away from the top players available, as they’re making a strong push to lure some of them to Chapel Hill. Who knows, maybe this prior connection will be the start of a bigger connection that will lead Tre Johnson to North Carolina.
