UNC Football: Tar Heels land standout defensive back transfer

The UNC football program (with a little help from a very prominent Tar Heel) landed a standout transfer from Ohio State.

We’ve said this before and we’ll gladly say it again: Armando Bacot should be hired by North Carolina as a recruiter once his basketball days are over!

Why do we say that?

Well, Bacot hasn’t been shy in assisting with trying to lure some top talents (from various sports) to Chapel Hill. In one of his most recent efforts, Bacot was recruiting Lejond Cavazos, a transfer from Ohio State, to join the UNC football program.

The connection between the two student-athletes started in high school, as the duo were classmates at IMG Academy. Once Cavazos hit the transfer portal, and saw the Tar Heels had an interest in him, Bacot stepped in to help the cause.

Now, after the back and forth on Twitter between the two athletes as well as an official visit to Chapel Hill, Cavazos has decided to continue his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina.

Cavazos, a San Antonio, Texas native, was a highly touted recruit out of high school. He was an Under Armour All-American, and the expectations for him were high when he arrived at Ohio State.

However, things didn’t necessarily go as planned, as he not only redshirted in his first year on campus but followed it up with just eight tackles and two pass breakups in 11 games during the 2021 season.

Now, Cavazos will look for a fresh start in Chapel Hill, a move that could be very beneficial for both sides:

"“I want to say how excited I am to be a Tar Heel. Everything about being at North Carolina fit what I was looking for. It’s a prestigious University, offering a great education, and the football program is on the rise. I’ve been able to build a strong bond with the coaching staff and you can see why people want to play for them. They’re excellent coaches, but even more important, they’re great men. I’ve also gotten to know some of the guys on the team, and I think I’ll be a good fit. I can’t wait to start this next chapter, get to Chapel Hill, and get to work with my new teammates.”"

Credit to Bacot for the assist on this one, as this is a move that Tar Heels fans should be excited about. The UNC football program’s secondary has the potential to be very good next season, as it will be a huge help for a team that definitely would like to improve on the defensive side of the ball moving forward.
