UNC Basketball Recruiting: Tar Heels battling blue bloods for five-star wing
There’s a new UNC basketball recruiting target in the class of 2024 and he’s already getting attention from all the usual suspects.
The North Carolina Tar Heels had a busy weekend at the Nike EYBL event in Orlando, Florida, sitting courtside for the better part of three days and watching some of the most talented high school basketball players in the nation.
Among them were class of 2023 five-star recruits Simeon Wilcher, Gregory “G.G.” Jackson, and Matas Buzelis, and four-star recruit Zayden High. The UNC coaching staff also checked in on a few class of 2024 prospects including No. 1-ranked Naasir Cunningham.
Hubert Davis and a pair of UNC assistants also joined a group of blue blood programs in watching Jason Asemota, a consensus top-25 wing in the class of 2024. Asemota, a 6-foot-9, 207-pound sophomore that attends Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix, Arizona, already holds nearly 20 scholarship offers.
Arizona, Auburn, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio State, and Texas Tech are among the programs to extend scholarship offers to Asemota in the early goings of his recruitment and it wouldn’t be surprising if Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, and a number of other high major programs follow suit in the coming months.
Asemota is the No. 18 prospect in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s ranked fifth among players at his position and first in the state of Arizona. There are currently no predictions in Asemota’s Crystal Ball and it could be quite some time before there are.
