Hubert Davis and his staff are looking to add to the UNC basketball recruiting class of 2023, watching a highly-rated prospect first thing Sunday morning.

It’s been a busy weekend for Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels coaching staff at the Nike EYBL event in Orlando, Florida. They’ve spent time watching 2023 UNC commit Simeon Wilcher, who had a solid 20-point performance on Friday night in front of his future head coach.

They also watched five-star power forward Gregory “G.G.” Jackson, the No. 1-ranked prospect in the class of 2023 who’s believed to be favoring the Tar Heels in the late stages of his recruitment. Another player that the Tar Heels have spent time on this weekend, Naasir Cunningham, is also ranked No. 1 in his class.

The UNC coaching staff was out early Sunday morning to watch class of 2023 small forward Matas Buzelis, a consensus five-star recruit from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire that plays for Expressions Elite. Buzelis is holding nearly two-dozen scholarship offers, including ones from Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and UCLA, so the Tar Heels, who offered him back in August 2021, have their work cut out for them in his recruitment.

Buzelis had 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists in front of Hubert Davis and two of his assistants, and his team won by a final score of 66-59 over Vegas Elite. He had just six points and five rebounds in his team’s second game of the day a few hours later.

A 6-foot-9, 175-pound wing that attends Brewster Academy, Buzelis is ranked 10th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s fourth among small forwards in the class and first in the state of New Hampshire.
