Former UNC football standout Mitch Trubisky has found a new home in the AFC North with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Monday, the official two-day period for NFL teams to negotiate contracts with current free agents began. Just under an hour after the start of the time in which teams could contact and negotiate contracts with players, a former UNC football standout found a new home.

As reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Mitch Trubisky has agreed to a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Tar Heel signal-caller is heading to Pittsburgh as the team’s expected starting quarterback, as he’ll be called upon to replace Ben Roethlisberger.

After spending a year as the backup for the Buffalo Bills, Trubisky regained his stock to a position where he will have the opportunity to be a starting quarterback once again. He’ll be joining a franchise that has a winning background and features a head coach in Mike Tomlin that is the second-longest tenure coach currently in the league.

Since 2018, Trubisky posted a 25-13 record as a starter, including a perfect 3-0 record against AFC North opponents. He’s still a very young player, as he’ll turn 28 this upcoming August.

It’s great to see Trubisky getting another opportunity to prove his value. After plenty of ups and downs as a member of the Chicago Bears, the former No. 2 overall pick took a chance on himself last offseason and signed a one-year deal to be a backup on a very talented Buffalo Bills team.

Trubisky probably could have signed elsewhere and competed for a starting job, but he bet on himself and took the opportunity to grow as a player both on and off the field. The decision paid off, as not only did he have multiple suitors interested in his services, but now landed a contract in which he’s expected to be a starter once again.

Fans of the UNC football program will have to keep a close eye on the league, as it’s possible that we could see both Trubisky and upcoming draft pick Sam Howell playing major roles for their respective franchises on Sunday afternoons.
