The UNC Basketball program is set to open up their 2021 NCAA Tournament run on Friday night taking on No. 9 Wisconsin in the South Region.

After an up and down regular season, the Tar Heels built some momentum over the final month of the year to secure their spot. They even upped their stock by going 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament to set up that eight seed.

While the Tar Heels are used to being in the tournament and being seeded high, this year is a little different. Instead of getting a one, two or three seed, the Tar Heels earned that eight seed, a spot that has been successful for them before.

More from UNC Basketball

The Tar Heels have a history of being an eight seed as this will be the fourth time they have found themselves on that line. All three previous times, the Tar Heels have won their first-round matchup and moved on to play the No. 1 seed. In two of those three games, the Tar Heels have prevailed and upset the No. 1 seed. But before UNC can start thinking of a potential matchup with Baylor on Monday, they need to take care of Wisconsin first.

Take a look at the history for the Tar Heels as a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
