Cameron Johnson

Team: Phoenix Suns

Current Record: 26-39

Playoff Position: 13th in Western Conference

Sitting six games back from the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns have the worst odds of the remaining teams to advance to this year’s NBA playoffs.

Knowing the odds, the final eight games will give the Suns an opportunity to look towards next season. No one will benefit more from this than Cameron Johnson.

More from Keeping It Heel

Looking to wrap up his first NBA season, Johnson will have the opportunity to gain more game experience. That will help the 24-year-old as he ultimately looks to take on a bigger role with the Suns moving forward.

During the 2019-2020 season, Johnson has appeared in 49 games, averaging 8.1 points-per-game. Although his role has been off the bench, Johnson has averaged more than 20 minutes-per-game, and if he continues to improve, his role will gradually increase.

Just like during his time at Chapel Hill, Johnson has shot the ball well in his first NBA season. Currently, Johnson is shooting just under 47% from the floor, and is shooting 39.7% from three-point land. Listed as a power forward, Johnson’s size for his position isn’t ideal, but his ability to shoot from anywhere on the floor definitely will create mismatches for opposing defenses.

Given the team’s current standing, it will be interesting to see if coach Monty Williams will expand Johnson’s play time over the final stretch of the season.
