Theo Pinson’s versatility standing out in NBA workouts

Former University of North Carolina wing Theo Pinson is doing everything he can to get his named called in the upcoming NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard/forward hybrid has already been in contact with about half of the league’s teams including workouts with the Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz.

More from Tar Heels in the Pros

Throughout his workouts, Pinson has tried to emphasize his versatility and athleticism to teams, while working on becoming a more consistent jump shooter. It’s the latter that had NBA scouts and general managers unsure if Pinson had a place in the league when he played his final game for the Tar Heels in March.

Now, though, just a day away from the draft, there’s a strong belief around the league and among those close to the North Carolina basketball program that Pinson will likely get drafted. Many even feel that it’s less about if he’s drafted, and more about when.

On Tuesday, Pinson held what will likely be his final workout prior to Thursday’s draft when he suited up for the Indiana Pacers. Pinson again tried to focus on his versatility as a defender, rebounder and ball-handler. He also continued to work on his offensive game – his jump shot, in particular – which he has tinkered with over the past few months in an attempt to improve his mechanics and consistency.

He has also been adamant with teams that he is comfortable with the ball in his hands, and a reliable back court option. His former coach, Roy Williams, has also gone out of his way to promote Pinson as a potential point guard in the NBA, citing his ability to dribble and pass, and leading the Tar Heels in assists as a senior.

Pinson played four years at the University of North Carolina, helping lead the Tar Heels to 118 wins, two ACC regular season crowns, two national title game appearances and an NCAA Tournament championship in 2017. During his final season in Chapel Hill, he showed a tremendous amount of versatility, averaging 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists.
