Point guard position

This just might be the biggest early storyline surrounding the Tar Heels for next season and we may not have a solid answer for the first few weeks of the season.

With the loss of Berry to graduation, the Tar Heels now have a big question mark at the point guard position and who will start.

Seventh Woods appeared to be the most-likely candidate going into the year and when Jalek Felton was dismissed, there was an advantage for Wood to take over. But as the year went on, Woods didn’t really take that next step in his sophomore season to make fans comfortable with him starting.

Now, that doesn’t mean that Woods can’t wow head coach Roy Williams and show over the summer that he’s ready to be the starter. Woods would have to show some significant improvement that he can run Williams’ offense and show that he’s ready to take over the important position.

The other option is freshman Coby White.

Williams has already spoken on the topic of what position the combo guard will play at UNC and made it a point to say he recruited him as a point guard. White has had a fantastic senior year and continued that into the offseason by winning gold with the USA U18 team this past weekend.

The battle for the starting spot will likely come down to Woods and White this offseason with the hope of one of them doing enough to stand out. We also can’t rule out Williams giving both players significant time early in the season before making his decision.

Either way, it’s something that is going to be fun to monitor as the days go by.
