Roy Williams was asked about Coby White’s position and he wasn’t backing down on it

One of the biggest question marks surrounding the 2018-19 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team will be the point guard position.

It’s been a topic of conversation even during the 2017-18 season when Joel Berry was playing in his final season for the Tar Heels. And surely the debate will continue until head coach Roy Williams reveals his first starting lineup in the season opener at Wofford.

With Berry gone to graduation, a starting spot is officially open at the point guard position.

Seventh Woods is entering his junior year and is coming off a disappointing sophomore season in which he began the year hurt. Woods hasn’t shown the development fans would have liked to see to make them believe he can take over this team.

Enter Coby White.

The talented class of 2019 recruit is listed as a combo guard and is one of the candidates to be a starter right away. On Tuesday, Williams spoke on White’s position and it sure sounds like White will be playing the point in Carolina Blue.

Williams was asked about White’s ability to play both guard spots and if he has him slotted in as a point guard because of the need. The head coach shot that down by saying that he recruited White as a point guard.

“That’s who he is,” Williams said. “When I first started recruiting him, I recruited him as a point guard. Period. But he can do some other things. He’s an instinctive passer. I recruited him as a point guard and the fact that he can play with somebody else gives him more playing time, but that’s what I recruited him as.”

White is currently playing with the USA Basketball U18 Team in Canada and it’s still very early to cement positions in. But there’s an interesting point to be taken from Williams’ comments.

We will likely see White play both spots and it sounds like he’s going to be in a battle with Seventh Woods for the starting spot.

There will also be some weird lineups that Williams will roll out there depending on the mismatches which will give White a chance to play at the two. We could very well see White and Woods as well as White and Little man down the guard spots in certain situations.
