Tar Heels travel to Nassau for summer exhibition games

The North Carolina men’s basketball team will travel to the Bahamas in mid-August to participate in a pair of exhibition games, according to a report from Inside Carolina on Wednesday.

The Tar Heels will play in two exhibition games as part of the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s “Summer of Thunder” event at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium in Nassau. It’s the team’s fourth trip to the Bahamas in the Roy Williams era, and first since 2014.

The Tar Heels visited the Bahamas in 2005 and 2010 for preseason games, in accordance with NCAA rules that allow teams to take international trips once every four years. The NCAA also allows for said teams to participate in 10 additional practices in order to prepare for the event in question.

The exhibition games will be a good opportunity for the team to gain some familiarity with their new pieces, and get used to playing without the old. It’ll be the first time in four years that the team has taken the court in an official capacity without the likes of Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson.

It will likely be the first opportunity that Tar Heel fans have to get a look at North Carolina’s highly anticipated incoming freshman class that includes Nassir Little, Coby White and Rechon Black.

NCAA rules permit freshman to participate in preseason foreign trips as long as they meet initial eligibility requirements. Given that they are set to enroll at UNC in June, all three players are expected to make the trip.

North Carolina is currently ranked eighth in both the CBS Sports Preseason Top-25 and ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top-25.
