UNC Basketball: Sam Perkins elected to Hall of Fame
Former Tar Heel elected to National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame
Former University of North Carolina power forward Sam Perkins has been named to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2018.
Perkins is one of six players and two coaches who will be inducted to the Hall of Fame at a ceremony on November 18th in Kansas City, Missouri.

Perkins was ACC Rookie of the Year in 1981, and a first team All-Conference selection on three occasions. He was instrumental in the Tar Heels’ 1982 NCAA championship run, and named to the NCAA All-Tournament team for his efforts. Perkins was named a second-team All-American as a sophomore, and a consensus first team All-American the following two seasons.
Perkins is one of six Tar Heels to have started in two national championship games, and ranks second in UNC history in rebounds, third in scoring and blocked shots, and fourth in double-doubles.
After graduating from North Carolina, Perkins served as co-captain for the gold-medal winning U.S. Olympic team, and was named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. He went on to play professionally after the Dallas Mavericks drafted him fourth overall in the 1984 NBA Draft. At the completion of his first season with the Mavericks, Perkins was honored as a member of the NBA All-Rookie first team.
During his 17-year NBA career, Perkins played for the Mavericks, Lakers, SuperSonics and Pacers. He appeared in the NBA Finals with the Lakers, Sonics and Pacers, and scored better than 15,000 points in his professional career.
Being inducted into the Hall-of-Fame with Perkins in 2018 is Arizona’s Sean Elliott, Arkansas’ Sidney Moncrief, Houston’s Otis Birdsong, Morgan State’s Marvin Webster, Southern California’s Paul Westphal, College of Charleston head coach John Kresse and Oregon Tech head coach Danny Miles.
