Roy Williams extends scholarship offer to class of 2018 power forward E.J. Montgomery

Despite coming up empty-handed in the recent Zion Williamson sweepstakes, the North Carolina Tar Heels may have one more opportunity at snagging an elite big man in the class of 2018.

On Wednesday, North Carolina head coach Roy Williams extended a scholarship offer to five-star power forward E.J. Montgomery, who decommitted from Auburn in September.

More from UNC Basketball

Since reopening his recruitment, Montgomery has been getting a lot of attention and soaring up recruiting boards. Formerly a fringe five-star recruit, he’s currently ranked sixth in 247Sports’ Top247, and No. 12 in the 247Sports Composite.

And he’s hearing from a number of big name programs including Clemson, Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina, all of whom currently appear to be in a good position to land the talented prospect.

The 6-foot-10, 200-pound senior from Marietta, Georgia is currently working with a list of 11 schools, but plans to cut the list down to five or six in the near future.

Williams, as well as UNC assistant coaches Brad Frederick and Hubert Davis, have taken trips to watch Montgomery play since his decision to decommit from Bruce Pearl’s Tigers. Davis was in attendance when Montgomery recorded 39 points and 15 rebounds in a late-January game.

At this point, there’s not much of a feeling as to where Montgomery will end up. There are those, though, who feel like Duke is the program that’s currently in the best position to land him.

After he cuts his list down in the coming weeks, we’ll have a little bit better idea of what teams he’s working with, and his most likely destination next season.
