Four-star prospect from class of 2019 picks Blue Devils

The Duke Blue Devils got their first commitment from the class of 2019 in five-star prospect Joey Baker.

The 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward tweeted out his decision last week, stating that he was “joining the brother hood”.

Baker is one of just two players in the 247Sports Composite top-25 to have given his commitment. The other is 17th-ranked LaMelo Ball, who plans to follow in his brother’s footsteps and attend UCLA next fall.

Baker, a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was also the target of a number of other big name programs, including North Carolina and N.C. State.

The Tar Heels were seen as a strong competitor in Baker’s recruitment before Duke extended a scholarship offer in late September. Baker committed to Duke less than a month after receiving the offer, solidifying the Blue Devils’ first pledge in the class of 2019.

Baker got national attention after a successful sophomore season in which he averaged 17.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for Trinity Christian.
