At this point, Xavier Lewis isn't simply having a breakout season for the UNC football program.

He's emerged as one of the best defensive linemen in the ACC.

Lewis added another dominant performance to what has quickly become a remarkable sophomore campaign, helping lead North Carolina to its 21-17 road victory over No. 25-ranked Pittsburgh. His efforts earned him ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors for the second time this season, further underscoring how important Lewis has become to the Tar Heels' defense.

Xavier Lewis has become an absolute force for the Tar Heels

Coming into the season, there was reason to believe Lewis could take a positive step forward in his development.

Through five games this season, it's safe to say he's blown past those expectations.

Lewis was everywhere against Pitt, recording a career-high tackle total while adding half a sack as the Tar Heels held the Panthers to 17 points. It was the latest standout performance in a season that has seen the sophomore emerge as a disruptive force on UNC's defensive line.

Through five games, Lewis has already accumulated 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Those numbers aren't just impressive among ACC qualifiers, but they rank him among the best that the country has to offer.

Not bad for a guy who wasn't ranked out of high school!

Lewis currently leads the ACC with 1.90 tackles for loss per game while ranking second nationally. His 1.30 sacks per game also lead the conference and rank fourth nationally. He's now forced opposing offenses to account for him on every snap: if they don't, he'll make them pay.

UNC may have found an anchor on its defensive line

There's still plenty of football to play this season, but we're quickly moving beyond wondering whether Lewis' hot start was sustainable.

Five games in, this is simply who he's becoming.

For a North Carolina defense looking for players to build around during the Bill Belichick era, Lewis has emphatically thrown his name into that conversation.

Calling him a breakout player might not even do it justice anymore: this dude is the real deal.

Xavier Lewis has been one of the biggest revelations of UNC's season, and based on what we've seen so far, he's only getting started.
