Where does the UNC basketball program rank in the first 2024-2025 NET rankings?
You know we're getting deeper into the college basketball regular season when the first set of NET rankings are released!
On Monday, the NCAA revealed the initial list for the 2024-2025 college basketball season. This is an important metric that is utilized to determine a team's NCAA Tournament resume.
In case you are new to the NET rankings, here's some information about the two metrics that are considered:
Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating. The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for the strength of the opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.
So, now that you know how it's calculated, you're probably wondering where the UNC basketball program ranks among the field.
Drum roll please...
North Carolina comes in at No. 26 on the initial NET rankings for the 2024-2025 college basketball season. The Tar Heels are the fourth-highest ranked ACC school, trailing Duke (No. 4), Pittsburgh (No. 5), and Clemson (No. 18).
While their NET non-conference strength of schedule sits as the seventh-toughest schedule in the country, the Tar Heels haven't fared well against Quad 1 teams. North Carolina is 1-3 in games against current Quad 1 teams, as three of the Tar Heels four victories have come against Quad 3 and 4 teams.
In order to boost the resume, you need wins against Quad 1 and 2 teams.
Of course, this is just the initial list (as it's guaranteed to change as the season goes along), but it at least gives you an indicator of where the UNC basketball program currently ranks among this system metric.
