Where does Hubert Davis rank among the active ACC head coaches?
The Atlantic Coast Conference has seen a change in the guard over the last few years.
From Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski's retirements to the sudden news of Tony Bennett stepping away from his gig at Virginia, the conference has quite a few newer (or somewhat new) faces leading the men's basketball programs across the ACC.
Along with adding three new teams to the conference, there's plenty of debate to go around as to how the coaching rankings should look at this moment. Brett Friedlander of Saturday Down South took a stab at ranking these head coaches, as Hubert Davis is very high on his list.
Heading into his fourth season at the helm for the UNC basketball program, Davis ranks No. 2 overall on Friedlander's list. The Tar Heels leader only trails Miami's Jim Larrañaga on this specific ranking.
Here's what Friedlander had to say about Hubert Davis:
"The former UNC shooting guard and ESPN analyst was a surprise choice to succeed Hall of Famer Roy Williams because of his relative lack of coaching experience. But Davis has grown into the job during his 3 seasons, in which he has combined a 78-31 overall record to go along with an NCAA Tournament final appearance in 2022 and a No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed a year ago. While he’s improving steadily as an Xs and Os coach, his strength is his passion for his alma mater, his positive outlook, and his ability to bring out the best in his players."
While he had no head coaching experience prior to accepting this job, Davis has seemingly transitioned nicely into the role. He led the Tar Heels to the 2022 national title game and is coming off a season in which his team won the ACC regular season title and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
So far, so good for Hubert Davis!
