The transfer portal... where student-athletes can come and go essentially as they please.
Make no mistake: North Carolina isn't the only program dealing with this. In fact, the UNC football program was the beneficiary of a transfer who has relocated twice in the previous six months.
Now, the Tar Heels are losing someone they recently brought in, as quarterback Ryan Browne is set to re-enter his name into the transfer portal.

While Browne's time at North Carolina lasted slightly longer than Kris Humphries' marriage to Kim Kardashian, it was short enough to where Browne never actually suited up in a regular season game with the UNC football program.
When Browne was recruited by the Tar Heels, the hope was that the Purdue transfer would compete for the starting quarterback job in Bill Belichick's first season as North Carolina's head coach. He seemed to be firmly in contention for the job through spring practices, battling with true freshman Bryce Baker, but there have been rumblings that North Carolina was looking to bring in another quarterback via the transfer portal.
Now, it makes more sense why the Tar Heels felt the need to pursue another quarterback.
With Max Johnson recovering from injury, the UNC football program is now looking for additional quarterback depth. While Baker being ready to secure the job from day one would be great for the Tar Heels, it would help tremendously to have another quarterback in the mix (preferably one with college football experience) to provide options for the Tar Heels to work with.
In this current world of the transfer portal, nothing should shock you at this point. Expect more situations like this to happen on a regular basis, as no program is safe from these types of decisions.
