Vance Honeycutt earns the chance to shine among baseball’s top prospects

When the Baltimore Orioles made the bold move to promote former Diamond Heels star Vance Honeycutt to Double-A, many questioned the decision.

It had nothing to do with the talent Honeycutt possesses, but had everything to do with his struggles in High-A ball.

However, Honeycutt (as Tar Heel fans expected) proved the doubters wrong, turning up the heat upon arrival at the next level. Since his promotion, Honeycutt has recorded 13 extra base hits, including five homers over 20 games played, showing why he was selected as a first round draft pick a few years back.

Now, Honeycutt's season isn't over, as he'll compete against some of the sport's top prospects in the annual Arizona Fall League.

Vance Honeycutt to play for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League

This week, it was announced that Honeycutt will be a member of the Peoria Javelinas for the 2026 Arizona Fall League.

In case you're unfamiliar with the Arizona Fall League, it's simply an off-season baseball league that's operated by Major League Baseball, providing top prospects the chance to enhance their skills during this six-week event that runs from early October through mid-November.

For Honeycutt, this is a tremendous opportunity to build upon his late-season success. Given what he's done at the Double-A level, Honeycutt will now get the chance to face some of the sports' up and coming pitching prospects, helping him get prepared even more for what's next in his professional baseball career.

With his success at Double-A, a good showing during the Arizona Fall League could put him on the radar for a promotion to Triple-A at some point in 2027, which will put him on the doorstep of making his MLB debut.

Honeycutt is one of those players who simply rises to the occasion. The bigger the moment, the brighter Honeycutt shines, as he proved how clutch of a player he is in all facets of the game during his three-year career at North Carolina. The Orioles sending Honeycutt to compete in the Arizona Fall League goes to show how much potential they see in him, wanting him to have that chance to continue his growth and development during a time where most players are in full offseason mode.

More experience is definitely a good thing, as you can never get enough meaningful reps, especially at the plate. There's no doubt that Honeycutt will be facing top-tier pitching prospects throughout the event, a good test for what he'll eventually see once he cracks the big league roster.

It's been great to see Vance Honeycutt do Vance Honeycutt-type things on the baseball field. His time in High-A was filled with injuries and offensive struggles, but there was never a doubt that the former Diamond Heels star would eventually figure it out.

Now, Tar Heel fans can watch him live against the best prospects baseball has to offer. Honeycutt has earned his spot among this group, as the insane final stretch of the season that he put together helped rejuevnate his stock as a prospect, especially within the Orioles minor league system.
