UNC Women's Soccer wins the 23rd National Championship in program history
The UNC women's soccer program has done it again!
For the 23rd time in program history, North Carolina is your NCAA Division I women's soccer national champion.
In another epic battle between two familiar foes, North Carolina and Wake Forest played a hard-fought first half that featured no offense. Both defenses stepped up to the occasion, as the goalkeepers made timely stops to keep the game scoreless into the second half.
Throughout the game, it felt like one goal would be enough, and that one goal came courtesy of UNC women's soccer standout Olivia Thomas.
In the 61st minute, Thomas scored her fourth goal of the NCAA Tournament, the one that would ultimately decide this game.
What a season it was for the UNC women's soccer program, capturing yet another national championship to bring home to the University of National Champions. From being Duke in the semi-finals to holding off Wake Forest for the title, the Tar Heels have added to the incredible legacy of the UNC women's soccer program.
And to think that the program's legendary head coach, Anson Dorrance, retired just before the season was about to begin!
Friendly reminder: it's time to remove the interim tag off of Damon Nahas' title. Nahas has done a tremendous job coaching this team and deserves the chance to be the head coach of the UNC women's soccer program for the long term.
As always: it's a GREAT DAY TO BE A TAR HEEL!!!
