UNC captures its ninth ACC Tournament title
The Tar Heels captured their ninth ACC championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Stanford Cardinal by a score of 12 to 8. A slow start didn't stop UNC from finding a way to claim the top spot in the conference once again.
Stanford got going early, scoring the first two goals of the championship match. North Carolina responded strong, scoring three consecutive goals to take the lead for good.
Of course, who else but Addison Patillo (who scored two of the first three goals) and Chloe Humphrey to get the offense going!
The Tar Heels took a 8-5 lead into the half and never looked back, adding on four more goals to secure the championship title.
Humphrey, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, finished with four goals and two assists. She broke the program's single-season scoring record, a mark that she previously set last season.
Kate Levy and Pattillo also had trick performances in the victory, as the trio combined for 10 of North Carolina's 12 goals on the afternoon.
Here's some UNC women's lacrosse history notes following today's title game victory:
9 ACC championships: 2002, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2025, and 2026
12 ACC regular season titles: 1998, 2000, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2025, and 2026
Dominance of the Cardinal: UNC is now 5-0 all-time against Stanford.
What's next?
On May 3, the NCAA Tournament seedings will be revealed, as North Carolina will claim the No. 1 overall seed once again in this year's event. We'll have to wait to see the path the UNC women's lacrosse team will have to battle through in order to defend its title as the reigning champions.
