When it comes to Thanksgiving meals, the seconds are usually just as good as the main dinner.
After handling South Dakota State on Thanksgiving Day, the UNC women's basketball program served up seconds in their rout over Kansas State on Friday morning.
Kansas State took the first punch, starting the game on a 5-0 run, but after that, the Tar Heels took over complete control of the game. North Carolina put together another strong offensive outing, one in which they shot 55% from the floor and 54% from beyond-the-arc, as four double-digit scorers helped pace the offensive attack.
Turning Point of the Game
After trailing 5-0 early, North Carolina settled down and took control.
The Tar Heels went on to outscore Kansas State 22-10 over the remainder of the quarter, as Elina Aarnisalo, Nyla Harris, Indya Nivar, and Lanie Grant sparked the offensive attack in the first quarter to give the UNC women's basketball program a lead it wouldn't relish.
Key Performers
Lanie Grant connected on four three-pointers to lead all scorers with 15 points. Following up her triple-double performance on Thanksgiving, Indya Nivar had another strong performance, finishing the contest with 14 points, seven assists and four steals.
Courtney Banghart didn't have to go too deep into her bench, but the players who saw extended minutes made meaningful contributions. The Nyla's, Brooks and Harris, provided sparks off the bench, contributing 14 points apiece while Laila Hull chipped in seven of her own to help propel the second unit.
Tying History
With their 14 three-pointers made, the UNC women's basketball program tied a program single-game record.
What's Next
Looking to cap off the trip to Cancun in style, the UNC women's basketball program will play for a third consecutive day on Sunday as they take on Columbia for a 1:30 PM EST tip-off. North Carolina aims to extend its winning streak to six games before heading to Texas for a much-anticipated ACC/SEC Challenge against a top-five ranked Longhorns team.
