UNC Women's Basketball puts together a statement win over No. 14-ranked Kentucky
Earlier this week, we discussed how the UNC women's basketball program deserved more respect in the AP Top 25 Poll. After winning the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, putting together some dominant performances, the Tar Heels remained neutral in the rankings, holding down the No. 16 spot for consecutive weeks.
Well, the Tar Heels put together a STATEMENT on Thursday afternoon, defeating No. 14-ranked Kentucky by 19 in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
North Carolina got off to a tremendously hot start, leading by as many as 15 during the first quarter of play. While the Wildcats, who came into this game unbeaten, would fight back, the UNC women's basketball program wouldn't let them get any closer than a five-point deficit.
One of the best rebounding and shot blocking teams in the country, Kentucky had trouble in both areas on Thursday afternoon. The Tar Heels out rebounded the Wildcats by 10 while limiting their Blue Blood opponent to just three total blocks.
Sophomore big Clara Strack came in averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds per game. She finished this game with four points and four rebounds. Georgia Amoore scored 10 first-half points but was absolutely silent in the second half.
It goes to show you just what a defensive effort the Tar Heels put together.
Reniya Kelly was outstanding, leading all scorers with 18 points. Maria Gakdeng was a rebound shy of a double-double (16 points, 9 rebounds), while Alyssa Ustby had 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
It's time to put some respect on the Tar Heels name, as this win over Kenny Brooks and the Wildcats is one that will certainly help their NCAA Tournament resume when that time comes along. For now, the UNC women's basketball program will enjoy this one before they host Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena.
