Five-star point guard Kate Harpring announced her commitment to the UNC women's basketball program. Harpring, a 5-foot-10 guard from Atlanta, Georgia currently ranks as the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2026 (according to 247Sports).
The daughter of former NBA veteran Matt Harpring, Kate chose the Tar Heels over a rather elite list of finalists. North Carolina edged out the likes of Iowa, South Carolina and UCLA (among many others).
When asked about why she chose North Carolina, Harpring told Dushawn London of 247Sports that the Carolina family played a huge role in her decision:
“I have a lot of confidence in the program and the whole UNC family. I'm really excited and think we can win championships.”
Landing a player of Harpring's caliber is significant in a variety of ways. For starters, it simply proves that what Courtney Banghart and the UNC women's basketball program are building is real, and top-tier talent wants to be part of it.
Additionally, it shows that North Carolina is ready to compete with the big dogs for some of the top talents that the country has to offer.
The UNC women's basketball program has now secured a pair of Class of 2026 commitments over a 48 hour span. Following four-star Noelle Bofia's commitment, Harpring followed it up by making a major splash on the recruiting trail.
Get ready, Tar Heels fans: the UNC women's basketball program is making major moves on the recruiting trail and seem to be far from done!
Now, Banghart will go back to fishing, looking to reel in some more talent. Just give her time and let her do her thing!
