When you're one of the country's top squads, opposing teams go above and beyond to add a blemish to your record.

Courtney Banghart and the UNC women's basketball saw (and conquered) another tough test, holding on to defeat Virginia Tech on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena.

Yet again, the Tar Heels got out to an early lead and looked to be in prime position to pull away. However, their opponent, this time the Hokies, battled back, regaining the lead with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter.

One of the common themes in the second half was Lexi Donarski's clutch gene. The fifth-year graduate student drained a jumper with two seconds remaining in the third quarter to regain the lead, but that wouldn't be the only big-time shot she made in this game.

Leading by one with just under 30 seconds remaining, the UNC women's basketball program needed points in a major way. Look no further than Donarski, who drove to the basket and finished a left-handed layup to extend the lead to three.

That basket, followed by a pair of made free throws by Reniya Kelly, helped the Tar Heels secure their 22nd victory of the 2024-2025 season.

Kelly was outstanding once again, leading all scorers with 20 points. Donarski was the only other Tar Heel in double-figures (15 points), as Maria Gakdeng (8 points), Grace Townsend (8 points) and Indya Nivar (7 points), helped carry the scoring load.

Alyssa Ustby only scored four points but hauled in 16 rebounds, becoming just the third UNC women's basketball player to reach the 2,000 rebound milestone.

Thursday night was yet another reminder of how competitive the ACC is, as you can't underestimate any opponent on any given night. The Tar Heels have certainly been battle tested throughout the entire season, as that won't change when NC State rolls into town on Sunday for a top 25 clash.
