Non-conference play for the UNC women's basketball program is now complete, as the Tar Heels likely would love to see it keep going given their success through the early portion of the 2024-2025 season!
The Tar Heels put together a dominant performance to defeat Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. With the win, North Carolina has 12 non-conference victories to its name this season, their most since the 2013-2014 season.
If you recall, that season was a rather special one in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina took control immediately, extending a 21-point lead after just 10 minutes of action. Lexi Donarski got the Tar Heels offense going early, draining a trio of three-pointers, while we once again saw consistent scoring from essentially every player who played more than 10 minutes.
Six different Tar Heels scored in double-figures, as freshman Lanie Grant had another outstanding performance off the bench to lead the team with 15 points. Filling in for the injured Reniya Kelly, Grace Townsend poured in 14 points, while Donarski and Maria Gakdeng each contributed 11 points of their own.
Alyssa Ustby recorded her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebouns. Ciera Toomey provided strong minutes off the bench, connecting on four of her six shots for a total of 10 points.
While the calendar year isn't officially over for the UNC women's basketball program, non-conference action is, and honestly, you have to feel really good about this team at the current moment. With a ton of depth to work with, the Tar Heels are a team that could make a run in the ACC, as they'll take a trip to Miami on December 29 to get that potential run started.
