You know what they say, where there's smoke, there's fire.
UNC has been heavily linked to Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman as they bolster the front court. Now, Bennerman joins the Tar Heels as the latest transfer portal addition secured by Michael Malone and his staff over the past few weeks.

On Monday, Bennerman made it official, pledging to the Tar Heels. He'll continue his college basketball career in Chapel Hill after spending one season at Northwestern, a season in which he redshirted and did not play.
Out of high school, Bennerman had interest from various programs, including (but not limited to): Michigan, Penn State, California, among others.
Bennerman is not expected to be Henri Veesaar's replacement. In fact, he is more of a long-term project for the staff to develop, as his 7-foot frame could be useful in mapping out the team's front-court rotation moving forward. Expect the Tar Heels to still be very much active on the market as they look to add multiple big men to the equation, hoping to find the right recipe of players who can fulfill the role in the post.
Not only is Veesaar's departure impacting next year's roster, but the losses of Caleb Wilson, Zayden High and James Brown also need to be considered. Sure, the Tar Heels need starting-caliber big men, but also need guys who can come in off the bench and make a positive impact.
That's where Bennerman comes into play.
We'll have to wait and see just how big a role the staff believes he can handle early on, especially given that he hasn't played meaningful college-level action. North Carolina is currently in a transition, one that includes an overhaul of the roster compared to what we saw a season ago.
Now, the Tar Heels have secured commitments from both Bennerman and fellow big man Maxim Logue, both of whom aren't splashy additions but can be sneaky-good pickups this offseason for the UNC basketball program.
